Upcoming Summer Slide Book Distribution:

  • July 11, 2024: Golden Gate Community Center
  • July 25, 2024: Everglades Community Center

Books for Collier Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a steady stream of new books to children in low-income families throughout Collier County, will again be distributing books with the Collier County Sheriff ’s Office at Hot Summer Nights 2024 this June and July.

“Without steady access to books throughout the summer, children experience significant, cumulative reading skill loss that can affect the rest of their lives and enter the school year with reading skills 30 percent lower than their peers,” said BCK Chair Sallie Williams. “Our partnership on CCSO’s Hot Summer Nights helps dramatically off-set this ‘summer slide.’”

For the third year in a row, volunteers from Books for Collier Kids will be on-hand to distribute free books to children at the Hot Summer Nights events throughout the county. The free community events, featuring games, food and fun for families and friends of all ages, take place on the following Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m.:

  • July 11, 2024: Golden Gate Community Center
  • July 25, 2024: Everglades Community Center

Launched in 2005 as First Book-Collier County, the charity has distributed more than 1.8 million new, high-quality, age-appropriate and personalized books to pre-K, kindergarten, first- and second-grade students to enhance their literacy development.

Since launching the Summer Slide program in 2009, the charity has distributed more than 3,000 new, age-appropriate books to Collier kids during the summer.
