First Book helps Collier County fight summer slide
Summer slide occurs when children from low-income households with no access to books over the summer suffer a major loss in their reading skills. In the fall, these children’s reading scores are some 30 percent lower than those of children who enjoy steady access to books.
First Book-Collier County is teaming up with other organizations to fight summer slide. We now provide wonderful new books through summer programs at the Boys & Girls Club, Grace Place, Guadalupe Center, Manatee Elementary School, New Horizons (serving Shadowlawn Elementary School children) and other sites. Our aim is to return these young children to school in the fall ready to read and ready to learn.
